Education News CUC professor copresents recommendations adopted at UNESCO conference on instruction Sept. 1, 2010–Sustainability, recycling systems, preserving resources on Earth—they were all among the subjects of recommendations adopted by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) during the 14th World Council for Curriculum and Instruction Conference last summer. Daniel Bardy, EdD, associate professor in the College of Graduate and Innovative Programs, co-authored and presented recommendations and resolutions on all of them at the July 11–17 conference held at the University of Pécs, in Pécs, Hungary. Bardy is cochair of the Global Education Special Interest Group. The group is part of the World Council for Curriculum and Instruction, a transnational educational organization committed to advancing the achievement of a just and peaceful world community. Additional recommendations included incorporating recycling practices in K-12 school settings; creating strategies on preserving Earth’s resources; adopting a culture of sustainability; and adopting recycling systems on international, national and local levels. The proposed UNESCO resolution addresses programs to benefit the Earth and human life. These include requiring corporations, governments and world organizations to take responsibility in caring for the planet; working internationally to build and maintain initiatives to reduce pollution; integrating global education curriculum in learning; and requiring institutions of society to adopt a plan of action to care for the Earth and its population.
