New book by Concordia-Chicago faculty members receives SSI Book of the Year Award

Leading with Resolve and Mastery: Competency-Based Strategies for Superintendent Success has received the Book of the Year award for 2018 in the category of Leadership and Education. The award, granted by Success Solutions International, Inc. (SSI), is given annually for the best new book that makes a difference in the lives of people everywhere, according to its award reward review panel.

“We believe that the book, underscoring the core competencies among educational leaders (superintendents) in our country, makes a significant part of the solution we need for educational leadership today and in the future,” stated Robert Browning, co-founder and chief executive officer of SSI, Inc.

The book, published by Rowman & Littlefield, was co-authored by four Concordia-Chicago faculty members: Dr. Robert K. Wilhite, Dean of the College of Graduate Studies and professor of educational leadership; Dr. Jeffrey Brierton, associate professor of educational leadership and internship supervisor for CUC’s Principal Preparation Program; Dr. Craig A. Schilling, professor of educational leadership; and Dr. Daniel R. Tomal, distinguished professor of educational leadership.

“This leadership book is distinctive because it is based upon original research on core competencies and especially relevant for school superintendents,” observed Dr. Dan Tomal. “Furthermore,” explained Dr. Craig Schilling, “this book represents the collaborative effort of experts in the fields of education leadership, human resources and finance."

Leading with Resolve and Mastery: Competency-Based Strategies for Superintendent Success is part of the Concordia University Chicago Leadership Series. The Series is a unique resource that consists of a variety of distinctive books on subjects such as leadership, social media, doctoral dissertations, research, school change, human resource management, songwriting, ethics and school policy, online technology and learning, and school finance. Dr. Daniel Tomal is the originator and current editor of the series.

Receiving this award automatically places the book in competition with the other award-winning books at the annual Grand Prize Literary Award Session held at the Authors’ Forum Book Award Conference, to be held in Hot Springs, Arkansas in 2019.
